NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A town in northwest Louisiana was being evacuated and state police were starting a criminal investigation of a company after finding about 6 million pounds of explosive material used in howitzers they say was stored illegally.

Boxes and small barrels of the M6 artillery propellant were found both outdoors and crammed into unauthorized buildings leased by Explo Systems Inc. at Camp Minden, the former Louisiana Army Ammunitions Plant, state police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said Sunday.

Police were evacuating the town of Doyline, about 270 miles northwest of New Orleans. About half the town’s 800 residents left Friday.

The company’s “careless and reckless disregard made it unsafe for their own employees, for schoolchildren in Doyline, for the town of Doyline,” Edmonson said.

The company is located on a portion of the former ammunition plant’s 15,000 acres that is leased for commercial use. Other sections are used for National Guard training.

Capt. Doug Cain, a state police spokesman, identified the product as M6 propellant, used in howitzers and other artillery. The pellets are largely compressed nitrocellulose, also known as guncotton.

Authorities had initially estimated the total at 1 million pounds after an investigator looking into an Oct. 15 explosion at Explo Systems saw cardboard boxes on long rows of pallets behind a building. They found more stacked in sheds and warehouses when crews returned Saturday to begin moving the boxes into bunkers about two miles away on the former munitions site, which covers nearly 23.5 square miles just north of Doyline.

“It wasn’t in their storage magazines. They had it hidden on the property, away from the storage magazines where we would expect to find it,” Cain said.

Edmonson said, “It was stuffed in corners. It was stacked all over.”

He said that in two days, crews have moved just under a million pounds from the tightest-packed buildings into approved containers and onto 27 tractor-trailers to move to storage bunkers. Another 250,000 pounds has been moved a safe distance from the bulk of the material.

It won’t all have to be moved into bunkers to let people return home — the evacuation could be lifted once the propellant is divided into amounts that won’t threaten the town if some ignites, with each area a safe distance from the others, Edmonson said.

Company officials could not be reached Sunday. The owners reportedly are returning Monday from a business trip to South Korea, but the manager has been working with state police from the start, Edmonson said.

Doyline was used to film some scenes for the HBO vampire series “True Blood.”

[Audio+Transcript] Ron Paul Speaks – Secession: Are We Free To Go?

Is all the recent talk of secession mere sour grapes over the election, or perhaps something deeper? Currently there are active petitions in support of secession for all 50 states, with Texas taking the lead in number of signatures. Texas has well over the number of signatures needed to generate a response from the administration, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath on Texas actually seceding, I believe these petitions raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union.

Is it treasonous to want to secede from the United States? Many think the question of secession was settled by our Civil War. On the contrary; the principles of self-governance and voluntary association are at the core of our founding. Clearly Thomas Jefferson believed secession was proper, albeit as a last resort. Writing to William Giles in 1825, he concluded that states:

“should separate from our companions only when the sole alternatives left, are the dissolution of our Union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers.”

Keep in mind that the first and third paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence expressly contemplate the dissolution of a political union when the underlying government becomes tyrannical.

Do we have a “government without limitation of powers” yet? The Federal government kept the Union together through violence and force in the Civil War, but did might really make right?

Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession. Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those “traitors” became our country’s greatest patriots.

There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents. That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform. In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo. If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it.

Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington state regarding marijuana laws. The people in those states have clearly indicated that they are ready to try something different where drug policy is concerned, yet they will still face a tremendous threat from the federal government. In California, the Feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. This shouldn’t happen in a free country.

It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with the deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges. It appears the Federal government will not respect those decisions either.

In a free country, governments derive their power from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over. If the Feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore? At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government? And if people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free?

If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free.

[video] Louisiana Sinkhole Grows to 8 Acres

“Evidence has now surfaced that the Louisiana sinkhole has grown to over eight acres with “ridiculous” amounts of oil outside the hole.”

November 17, 2012 – LOUISIANA, UNITED STATES – In the following excerpts from The Advocate, the Assumption Parish Situation Summary and the informal meeting of Bayou Corne Resident Meeting with Louisiana State Representatives; evidence has now surfaced that the Louisiana sinkhole has grown to over eight acres with “ridiculous” amounts of oil outside the hole.

Officials said that the gas freed by the cavern collapse now poses an uncertain risk to Bayou Corne residents who have been evacuated from their residences for more than three months. Meanwhile, officials have called for in-home air monitoring and specialized detectors and ventilation systems for slab-foundation homes. The evacuation order, affecting about 150 homes in the Grand Bayou and Bayou Corne communities, was issued within hours of the discovery of the sinkhole, though the presence of the gas now provides another reason to keep the order in place, parish officials have said The sinkhole, which now has an 8-acre surface area, is located in swamps between the communities south of La. 70 on property leased by Texas Brine from Occidental Chemical Corp. Boudreaux provided estimates showing the three vent wells had released 558,000 cubic feet of gas through Friday morning. An investigatory well that the Office of Conservation ordered Texas Brine to drill months ago to peer inside its failed cavern has burned another 598,000 cubic feet of gas through early Friday. Combined with the three vent wells, the four wells have removed nearly 1.2 million cubic feet of gas, the figures show. – The Advocate.

As of the 13th of November, the mandatory evacuation is still in effect… Texas Brine has removed 123 roll off boxes hydrocarbon contaminated debris and approximately 1900 Barrels of hydrocarbons from the surface of the sinkhole… USGS estimates the sources of seismic activity to be between 200 and 600 meters deep… In response to Texas Brine’s assertion that region seismic activity caused their cavern to be compromised, USGS stated (on 25 Sept. 2012) that it is their belief that the seismicity is a consequence of the collapse of the cavern, and not the cause of the collapse of the cavern and the formation of the sinkhole… – Assumption Parish Situation Summary [PDF].

In the following video of the informal meeting of Bayou Corne Resident Meeting with Louisiana State Representatives, the following extract can be heard at 35 minutes into the broadcast:
Resident: I done a flyover and I took some video there. That hole is — the oil outside of the boom of that thing is ridiculous. Why isn’t the EPA involved in that?

Rep. Karen St. Germaine: They are.

Resident: … That swamp water is contaminated behind those peoples’ houses. No doubt in my mind the swamp is contaminated.

Congressman: Greece-like ‘day of reckoning’ complete with ‘riots’ to hit America soon if country keeps going down same path

“What I fear is we’re going to be too late, and we’re going to run into a Greece-like situation, where we have riots and unemployment levels are up around 11 percent.”

-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-

Louisiana Republican Rep. John Fleming told The Daily Caller that, ever since President Barack Obama’s re-election last Tuesday, he has been advising Americans to play it safe financially because he believes the economy — and the state of the country — may soon get much worse.

Fleming said he’s telling concerned constituents and business owners to “not extend yourselves in debt, make sure that you pay off things, don’t get into debt with credit cards, stay as liquid as possible. Don’t take risk, and don’t get into debt. You need to stay less vulnerable economically over the next two to four years, in hopes that the economy will sort itself out, and that Washington will get its act together.”

Fleming said he thinks the presidential election was hardly a mandate for Obama’s liberal policies, or a populist rejection of Republicans’ conservative ideals.

“I think always, when you have a candidate promising free stuff, and another promising less stuff or nothing, the one who promises more is always going to have the advantage,” he said. “The problem is that we’ve been doing that for about five decades, and it’s getting us into serious trouble.”

Ultimately, Fleming said he believes the rising national debt is analogous to “reaching into the next generation” and “taxing kids who aren’t even born yet,” and must be addressed. “That’s really what we’re dealing with,” he said, adding that if it isn’t fixed, it’ll “backfire on the American people.” (RELATED: Federal debt per household skyrockets in last three years)

After Obama’s re-election, Fleming said now it looks like “the American people chose to continue down that road, despite the fact that we have other countries ahead of us, like Greece, that are suffering massively.”

“It looks like we’re going to have to go through the same or similar pain [as Greece] to get real reforms,” Fleming said.

If America doesn’t band together to halt America’s fiscal woes, Fleming said, “what’s going to happen is there’s going to be a day of reckoning that gets into a serious situation where we have to make tough choices.”

“Both Republicans and Democrats are going to have to do that [turn the country around],” Fleming said. “What I fear is we’re going to be too late, and we’re going to run into a Greece-like situation, where we have riots and unemployment levels are up around 11 percent. That’s what we’ve been trying to avoid.”

Ultimately, Fleming said he thinks President Obama should be the one who compromises with House Republicans – not the other way around.

“I think that we should not compromise,” he said. “We need to hold to what’s important, because the real danger for this country is our debt and deficit and the impact it’s having on the economy. Just because the president was re-elected – and certainly many of the things that he believes in and wants to do, the private sector and economy doesn’t agree with that. We just had a number of companies announce layoffs as a result of Obama being re-elected. The stock market didn’t take the news very well. I’m getting calls already from private business owners telling me that they are pulling their fins in, they’re reducing their debt, and they’re just going to go on cash flow – they’re not going to grow or invest or hire.”

Fleming is upset with House Speaker John Boehner for promising via an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that the House GOP will seek a “comprehensive approach” to immigration reform in the wake of Tuesday’s election. (RELATED: Lawmaker rebukes Speaker of the House John Boehner for making promises to the media)

Fleming said he’s upset Boehner made such a promise without talking to House Republicans about it first. Obama raked in the Hispanic vote en masse over Mitt Romney and Republicans on Tuesday.

“There has been no discussion about comprehensive immigration reform – which is really, as we all know, a code for some degree or another, amnesty,” Fleming told TheDC. “There’s been no discussion in the last two years that I can recall – no discussion on that issue.”

“On amnesty and immigration, the kneejerk response here – and you even see it from some of the conservatives like Charles Krauthammer – is to say ‘look, we need to start pandering to those people,’” Fleming said. “The problem with doing that is we’ll never be able to compete with Democrats when it comes to offering things up. Many things that have happened since [Richard] Nixon [was president] have been to help certain groups, and then they came back and voted in Democrats. We’ll never win that race pandering to specific groups.”
